, Jan 13: Privately run health institutions in Gamgadi, the district headquarters of Mugu, are clearly playing with public health as most of them are being run by non-medical professionals. If you visit any of these medical centers, you are most likely to be examined by the promoters or their family members rather than a trained doctor or medical practitioners. Including two ayurvedic centers, there are a total of seven privately run medical facilities in Gamgadi, and only two of them are manned by those with some medical experience.
This scenario has not changed despite periodical monitoring conducted by the local administration. “Wives of the clinic owners, who can hardly write their names correctly, are performing the doctor´s job here. It´s hard to believe that we are still alive and kicking,” said a local. Malla Medical Hall, Prithivi Medical Hall, Chandra Medical Hall, and Sumi Ayurvedic Medical in Gamgadi are virtually being run by housewives. Bishnu Malla, with maternal and child health education background, works at Shive Shakti Medical Hall and Rara Medical Hall is being operated by a health assistant. As per the law of the land, only those entrepreneurs who have license to run a health center from medicine management section of the Department of Health Services can prescribe and sell medicines to the locals.
In addition to that, a relevant medicine certificate is a prerequisite for the entrepreneurs. Denying the allegations, a pharmacist Jay Prithivi Malla said that his wife sits in the clinic just to watch over the business and she has been selling only the medicine asked by the locals. “We never prescribe medicines because we know the law,” said Malla. In case of breach of the law, the convict can be jailed for the maximum of five years. Meanwhile, Chief of Nepalgunj chapter of the Department of Drug Administration, Nilu Shrestha, blamed resource crunch for the poor implementation of monitoring procedure in the district. On the other hand, many state-run medical centers in Gambadi have employed health assistance for the very purpose.
